On May 7th 1915, 91 years ago today, the Cunard Liner Lusitania was in sight of the Irish coast after crossing the Atlantic from New York when she was torpedoed by a German submarine. 1,198 people lost their lives that day, in a event that would contribute to the beginning of World War I.

Bit of a late reply, but a reply none the less :)

Well strictly speaking, it's more of a question. Since Lusitania and her sister where built with government subsidies, and were built with military service in mind. Why didn't they think to amour the vessels? Yes I know, expensive, but after all, they where built with this in mind, even the plans have mounts for 6'' guns etc. Rather pointless for the British to spend all that money in something that is, from a military point of view, worthless. But, what I am most interested in is why they used Mauretania for service, but kept Lusitania in public service (all be it, once a month trips). Thanks a lot ;)

That is a really good question, one which is open to alot of debate. Like you said, it probably would have been very espensive to have armor plating put onto the Lusitania during construction when they didn't actually know a war was going to break out. Also perhaps they thought at the time that nothing could do enough damage to her hull to sink her (just a theory). As for why Mauretania was chosen for service and Lusitania wasn't... perhaps they just needed one ship for service at that time. Going to check into it...

Was rather dangerous though, I mean the Germans had their U-boat's surrounding the west coast of the UK, the original captain actually stepped down due to the stress he suffered from this danger. And passengers could easily travel on a neutral ship, without danger.

Was it the National Geographic special with Dr. Ballard? I have that one..but it doesn't talk about what we are trying to find out. Still working on it.. it is hard to find that information. It does not just pop out at you like some things. Have been quite busy lately... but i'll let you know if I find anything.
