I have spoken to any number of people who have been to sea, and they all assure me that the binoculars wouldn't have made a bit of difference - they are useful for [i:a57603e63b]identifying[/i:a57603e63b] something once spotted, but for spotting something in the first place, you want a naked eye. Also, blaming the crew for the disorganisation that night is untoward: they had only been working as a crew since two days before the sailing; they had never participated in any emergency drills [i:a57603e63b]of any sort[/i:a57603e63b] (with the exception of the hand-picked crew who did a one-boat boat drill in Southampton); and they were not warned about the fact the ship was actually sinking.
